The short answer - yes and no. The long answer - well, you are not likely to get pregnant during your periods but it’s not impossible.

The reason it’s unlikely is because women typically ovulate several days after their periods. That said, if you have a shorter than normal period cycle (i.e. 21 to 24 days), you could be ovulating earlier. So if you have sex towards the end of your period and if the sperm survives inside the reproductive tract for five days (which it can), you can get pregnant.

Can you get pregnant before your period?

If you have a typical 28 to 30 day cycle, your ovulation will occur between Day 11 to Day 21. Since the egg is available for conception for only 12 to 24 hours, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get pregnant right before your period. Long story short, if you're using the rhythm or fertility awareness methods (FAMS) to avoid getting pregnant, then it’s safest to have sex during these days.

If you have a longer cycle than 28 to 30 days, you’ll have more safe days. And if you have a shorter cycle than that, you’ll have fewer safe days.

Can you get pregnant right after your period?

Yes, you can. Since the fertility window starts from Day 11 (typically), It is quite possible to get pregnant right after your period.

Say your period lasts for 5 days. If you have sex on the sixth or seventh day and the sperm is present in your reproductive tract for another five days, you’re approaching the fertility window. So if your goal is to conceive, this could be a good time have sex.

What to do if you get pregnant unintentionally?

Don’t panic! Your first step should be to book an appointment with an obstetrician/gynecologist at the earliest convenience and speak with a medical professional. It is strongly advised to not perform any home remedies in this scenario since it can do more harm than good.
