An estimated 14% to 25% of women are affected by irregular periods. And although we’re taught that a regular menstrual cycle is 28 days long, in reality periods occurring every 21 days to 35 days can be considered normal. Periods are considered irregular if the length of the menstrual cycle is constantly changing.

Causes of Irregular Periods

Life changes such as pregnancy, miscarriages, puberty, menopause, childbirth and breastfeeding lead to changes in the levels of estrogen and progesterone in a woman’s body. When the levels of these hormones are fluctuating and adjusting it’s common for women to experience irregular periods.

Other factors that can temporarily cause irregular periods are:

  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Sudden weight changes or eating disorders
  • Medicinal side-effects
  • Excessive amounts of exercise

When to Seek Medical Advice

In most cases irregular periods are temporary and resolve themselves through healthy lifestyle changes and home remedies. But in some cases, such as PCOS and hypothyroidism, birth control may be given to regulate periods.

Some warning signs to look out for are having unusually painful periods, excessive bleeding, blood clots, abnormal or foul-smelling vaginal discharge, high - fever, nausea, rare and frequent periods. Please contact a medical professional if you experience any of these symptoms since they can be indicative of serious health concerns.
